That’s right, former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar returns to the Octagon for the first time since last July, when he defeated Frank Mir in a dominating and convincing fashion at UFC 100. But Lesnar’s time away from the sport but wasn’t by choice, as he almost lost his life.
As Lesnar got set to face off with Carwin last November, he became ill during training camp. Initially the diagnosis was mononucleosis, but after awhile, even that went out the window. Instead, he was eventually diagnosed with a rare condition of the intestine, known as diverticulitis, and nearly lost his life. Now back in the action, and back in fighting shape, he’ll face the toughest challenge of his UFC career, when he takes on Carwin.
Carwin has been waiting for this opportunity since last November, when his original fight with Lesnar was postponed. Instead, UFC President Dana White set up a match with Carwin and Mir, and the 30-year-old Carwin quickly dismantled the overmatched Mir when they met last November. Carwin enters this fight 12-0, and shockingly has never had to fight past the first round.
Quite honestly, that will be the toughest challenge for Lesnar: Simply staying on his feet against the legendary punching power of Carwin. His last two matches have only added to the myth, as Carwin defeated Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96 back in March 2009, and then followed it up with November’s victory over Mir. After defeating Mir, Carwin claimed the interim Heavyweight Championship that was vacated by Lesnar.
Don’t count out Lesnar however. This is a man who not only has the results in the Octagon, but enters this match as fit as he’s ever been. Having lost weight because of the illness, Lesnar has built his body back up with proper diet. And his training has never been better, as Lesnar brought in former UFC Heavyweight Champion (and opponent) Randy Couture into his camp. Don’t let the ring rust fool you, Lesnar will be ready for this match.
Because of it, make Lesnar your Saturday night UFC bet.
Yes, there are questions and concerns about Lesnar, especially with all his time away from the Octagon. But on the flip side, at times Lesnar thought he might never fight again, meaning that he’ll be ready to go for Saturday night.
Also for all the talk about both being former college wrestlers, each wants to stand up, and expect this to turn into a street brawl. Sure Lesnar has never faced anyone with Carwin’s punching power, but at the same time Carwin has never faced anyone with Lesnar’s capabilities either. And what happens if this goes beyond the first round? We’ve never seen Carwin go late into a match. Is his fitness up for it?
We opened this article saying that the King was back, and back he is indeed.
After almost losing his life, Brock Lesnar is ready to regain his crown as UFC Heavyweight Champion. Make him your Saturday UFC bet.
