World Cup Final Odds: Spain or Netherlands to Win First Title

Sunday’s World Cup championship match in Johannesburg between Spain and the Netherlands, the world’s No. 2 and No. 4 teams, respectiv.ely (although both ranking could improve when the new ones are released next week), should see a lot of firsts regardless of which side wins. Spain is a +110 favorite on Bodog’s World Cup odds with the Dutch at +240.
Neither country has won the World Cup before, with the Netherlands falling in two finals in the 1970s and Spain getting to the championship for the first time. No team has ever won the World Cup after dropping its first game of the tournament, which Spain did to Switzerland. And no European side has ever won the World Cup off its own continent. This is the first World Cup final not to feature Brazil, Germany, Argentina, or Italy.
The Netherlands won every World Cup qualifying match and each of the six so far in this tournament. Only one other side, Brazil in 1970, has gone through qualifying and the finals with a 100 percent record (i.e. no draws either). In fact, the Dutch are on a 25-match unbeaten streak. If Spain wins, it will be the second team to win the World Cup while the reigning European Champions, joining 1974 World Cup champion (West) Germany. The Spaniards only have seven goals in this tournament, and no country has won the championship scoring less than 11 goals.
The winner of the Golden Boot Award should be decided today as Spain’s David Villa and Holland’s Wesley Sneijder both lead this tournament with five goals. If the Dutch win, Sneijder will cap a year unlike any. He would win a fourth major title in one year: He helped Inter Milan win a league championship, Italian Cup and Champions League crown.
In nine all-time matches, each side has won four times. No players will be forced to sit out because of a suspension in this match.
